Kumar Sangakkara was previously the head coach of Rajasthan Royals. The legendary Sri Lankan cricketer is returning to his old role in the IPL franchise. This was reported by Indian cricket-based media ESPNCricinfo.
Sangakkara was the head coach of Rajasthan as well as the director of cricket from 2021 to 2024. Under him, Rajasthan played the final of the 2022 IPL. Although they lost to Gujarat Titans and became runners-up. It was Rajasthan’s second final in the history of the tournament. In 2008, i.e. the first season of the IPL, the team owned by Shilpa Shetty played in the title-deciding match.
In 2025, Rajasthan played the IPL under Rahul Dravid. Although their season went very badly. Rajasthan finished the tournament in ninth place out of 10 teams. They had only four wins. Therefore, despite having a multi-year contract, Dravid ended his relationship with Rajasthan after just one season. Sangakkara is going to return to the dugout of the franchise after just one season.
Prativaden Cricinfo reported that Sangakkara has already started planning for the next season of the IPL. Rajasthan will have to bring in several cricketers to revamp the team. They are even in trouble with the leadership. Long-time captain Sanju Samson has applied for resignation. Ultimately, if this wicketkeeper-batsman leaves, Rajasthan will have to choose a new leadership. The names of Riyan Parag and Yashasvi Jaiswal are emerging as alternatives.
Although the relationship with Dravid has ended, Vikram Rathour will be seen as an assistant coach in the next season of the IPL. On the other hand, Shane Bond will continue to work as a bowling coach.
